H5P: one multifunctional platform for blended learning classroom

Welcome to this week's blog. Today I will introduce blended learning --- an interactive way of learning, which is more and more popular for online learning.

What is blended learning?

Blended learning has many definitions, but basically, blended learning is a combination of face-to-face learning and online learning.
According to Dudency and Hockey (2007: 138-139), a blended course is delivered 75% online and  25% face-to-face.

Why use blended learning?

Compare with transitional learning, blended learning allows learners to study on their own pace and it can meet their needs better. Namely, it is more effective than the normal one. Besides, it's less time-limited, learners have more freedom to choose when to finish the class. Most blended courses have recording, so it's easy for learners to revise.

How to use blended learning in teaching?

I recommend H5P to do blended learning. This website has many functions that can meet teachers' needs to the maximum extent.

Teachers can use it to make presentation, quiz and many other activities, which can make the class more interesting. H5P has the guide video for the beginners, it can make it easier.
Course Presentation may be the most commonly used tool in the class. You can design the presentation as you like, and you can insert pictures, videos and quizzes. For example, learners can answer some questions after they read an article, which can check their understanding timely.

Some limitations
  • It may be a little difficult to operate the website because it has so many functions, and it's hard to make choices for the new teachers.
  • As a teacher, you need to ensure the web link can work, if the link doesn't work, do you have a plan B?
  • Face-to-face communication is always important, it's mutual feedback. Teachers need to listen to their students to know what needs to be improved, and teachers should also give some feedbacks to enhance students' ability.
Blended learning is more and more popular because of its cost-effectiveness, it can help learners save time and money. But teachers can't ignore the importance of face-to-face teaching.

I found a video related to blended learning, hope it could be helpful.
